CHEF JYOTI ‘GIOTTI’ SINGH IS MOST REQUESTED BY INDIANS WHO WANT TO LET THEIR COMMNATIONALS DISCOVER ITALY

Owner of the Haveli restaurant in Florence, he organizes weddings and corporate events

An ancient saying goes:

“You can take an Indian away from India, but you can never take India away from an Indian.” A phrase that summarizes how much the population of the Asian subcontinent is linked to its rites and traditions, even if it is thousands of kilometers from home.

Entrepreneur Jyoti ‘Giotti’ Singh, the chef most requested by those who want to introduce our country to the highest range of business travellers, knows this well.

Already the owner of the longest-running Indian restaurant in Florence, Haveli, and creator of a “dream factory for hundreds of Indian citizens who want to get married in our country, for 20 years Jyoti and his wife Rubel have been combining the wedding sector with that of events corporate. Together with high-end catering, which led him to sign some of the most sumptuous Indian weddings celebrated in Italy, fulfilling the wishes of politicians, sportsmen, business captains, finance magnates and Bollywood stars, Singh is today the most sought after among chefs also for hosting corporate team building events and for all the occasions in which an Indian company offers its executives a taste of Italy, in a context not linked to business.

The Indian subcontinent today has over 1.4 billion inhabitants. For the wealthy segments of the population, Italy still represents the ideal destination for both a wedding and a corporate event: “Our fellow citizens*, say Jvoti and Rubel, “are not so interested in getting married or doing team building in a city of art, but rather the context: whether it is a historic villa, a location overlooking the sea or the Chianti hills, the important thing is to be together”.

But this is where the difference between weddings and corporate events becomes significant: “Weddings are about feelings. For three days the guests celebrate traditional Hindu or Sikh rites together. At corporate events, business remains in the foreground and the important thing is to show off excellence, including gala dinners and every other need“.

The last event in which Jyoti was called by his compatriots was in mid-October, when a hundred cruise passengers in the Mediterranean asked to stop with him in Florence. But the drawer of memories is full of anecdotes: “In 2008 we were asked to provide lunch – strictly Indian – to around 200 passengers on board the Eurostar between Venice and Rome. We managed to serve baskets to everyone in the few minutes we stopped at the Santa Maria Novella station in Florence.”
